Whether at a traditional school, a progressive school, or homeschooling, this is true for all teachers :-)

How did this slide under my radar? I was looking through the docs on Netflix and when American Teacher scrolled by I reflexively rolled my eyes, expecting another Waiting for Superman-type movie. But when I noticed that it was narrated by Matt Damon (remember when he called out the reporter at the SOS rally?) and produced by Dave Eggers, I perked up a bit. I’m not finished watching yet but I’m so excited that there’s actually a pro-teacher doc out there that I have to share with other Tumblr educators.

I read somewhere that in Finland, teachers are as respected and paid as much as doctors and lawyers. Finland is also reputed to have the one of the best education systems in the world (or was it the best?). How society views teachers play a big part.
I worry about the same thing…Yes.

Letters to a First Year Teacher: The Compilation
We have all been in the same place as you as your are about to start your first year teaching and we wanted to give you some thoughts and advice from our individual perspectives. Below are 19 different letters from teachers of various subjects (mostly math and physics). The letters are also compiled as a Google Doc or pdf for those who would prefer the advice in that form as opposed to clicking through various teaching blogs.

College is a place where the professor’s lecture notes go straight to the students’ lecture notes, without passing through the brains of either.

OUT OF THE BOX
After school teachers lessons.
We have started a new project in the school working with the student council. Teachers at the school who wanted to learn more about art have been invited to after school teachers lessons where they can learn about different art techniques. The students from the school have been teaching the teachers and the role reversal has worked very well. Me and the other artists working on the project are there for support at all times - but the students don’t seem to need it! They have been fantastic and it has really brought some of the students out of their shell.
The students all said they had gained a lot of confidence in teaching their teachers and it seems to have given them a mutual respect for one and other: the students can see how hard it is to teach when people are talking over you etc and the teachers have really seen the most engaging ways to be taught.
Here the students are giving a lesson on textile art.

Teaching Guides For Grade 1→
On the last week of April we trained the regional trainers of first grade teachers in the Philippines. We started a Facebook page where we can post links so all the teachers can download all our documents and visual aids for free.
We encourage all the teachers to adjust the lesson plans to fit their regions, and one translator went as far as to add photos of weaves and architecture particular to the Tausug. Perhaps it will be helpful for everyone.

I don’t need standards to teach. I need students.

Sad ‘Cause It’s True of the Day: It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, and Jimmy Kimmel’s gift to educators across the country was an opportunity to give their students’ parents a piece of their minds.

Making Great Teachers
by Robin Hood

That’s the goal, isn’t it? To inspire at least one student, who will later pay it forward - and keep the chain going.

What makes a teacher a good educator?
This description reminds of the teachers in the best teacher movies.
And yes, they are out there.
The best teachers are usually unconventional people. I don’t mean crazy or weird. I mean that they can be law abiding citizens with very normal boring lives who simply have an unconventional approach to life. Maybe some 4D personality traits. Maybe just eccentric. But usually good teachers can teach well because they know how to make any subject alive and interesting. And most of all they NEVER take themselves too seriously.
